Rochdale have confirmed that Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira has now headed back to his parent club following the expiry of his loan spell with us.

The 19 year old stopper came in on a one month loan the other month and provided bench cover allowing Jonny Diba to get more youth games under his belt without the distraction of first team involvement getting in the way.

During his time with us he played one game – the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy loss to Morecambe in midweek.

Manager Keith Hill explained to the Official Site that his return was unfortunate but he can’t guarantee anybody games and the player obviously wanted more minutes to aide his own development.

‘He has returned to Manchester and disappointingly so, may I add. He`s an excellent player, I love him to bits and he suits me as a Manager with the type of goalkeeper that he is – he`s very flamboyant, very risqué and very confident. He wanted me to give him assurances but I won`t give anybody an assurance of playing or guarantee that they`ll play. I want a competitive nature to training and I want everybody to feel as though they`ve got an opportunity to prove themselves worthy of playing within training.’

Hill went on to add that the door wasn’t closed on the player for the future, but it was largely down to him.

‘I understand his thoughts and if he changes his mind and wants to come back then he`d be embraced with open arms because I think he`s an excellent young kid who has got an unbelievable future in the game. I`m glad that he came to us and I`m glad that he played on Tuesday night because I thought the was excellent.’
