Manager Keith Hill has said that he was delighted with the performance that we put in against Bolton Wanderers, even though we lost the game two nil.

Speaking to the Official Site following the match, Hill said he was particularly pleased because it was a relatively young side on display in the game, notably Johnny Diba.

‘The game was really encouraging from my perspective when you look at the young players that were playing. It’s games like these that they can earn their stripes and it gives me a lot of thoughts going into the season. I’m really pleased with the work out and if you look at the line up for Bolton, arguably, it’s their starting line up and the same can be said with respect to my line up. I’ve got no fear of playing these young players and they won’t let me down.’

Talking of the youth element, Hill had to pick out debutant Diba.

‘Johny, who’s 16, was in goal, and I was really pleased with his contribution. Like I said, I’m really encouraged with the performance.’

Hill again says he’s not concerned with results because in pre season it’s about a bigger picture and it’s about being ready when the league season kicks off properly, so especially against a team from a higher division to see us compete, create chances and grow into the game as we did is a clear positive as far as he’s concerned.

The only disappointment is he feels both of their goals could’ve been avoided really, but those are the teething problems you want to see in pre season because they can then be identified and worked on.
