Manager Keith Hill has said as far as he’s concerned it was a case of job done as we beat Chesterfield one nil at the weekend.

On the back of two disappointing losses to Peterborough and Walsall, Hill was desperate to see us get back to winning ways, and he said the players felt the same as everybody had been down – so to get the win has lifted everyone again.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, he explained.

‘The boys were getting a little bit down mentally because of the two previous results and the way that we had lost the games. We scored three goals in those two games, enough to pick up points away from home, so it was about trying to re-establish a bit of self belief. I think once we scored the goal it was evident that the self belief and the confidence were reinstated.’

Hill goes on to say that at this level it isn’t always about the difference in quality between the teams in terms of individual ability, it is about mental strength, confidence and feeling good and sometimes that will be the only reason for a win or a loss, so for us to get some confidence back and draw a line under those defeats can only be good for us.

‘It’s amazing how football and players’ attitudes and performance levels change in seconds in football – that’s what’s so unique about it.’

With goalkeeper Josh Lillis saving us two points in the game with his late save in stoppage time, Hill picked him out for praise and said with the goals conceded of late keeping a clean sheet would’ve done wonders for him and the defence as well.

‘It has done him the world of good. It’s his first league clean sheet since Cheltenham at home last season so it has been a long time, but thoroughly deserved. It’s also therefore his first clean sheet since recovering from injury and getting his place back from Conrad Logan when he suffered his problems.

‘I think the players, including the substitutes, defended exceptionally well. It’s reassuring that we can find that type of result when we need to. It wasn’t a spectacle with respect to free flowing football but we got the job done and the three points are enormous. The points were needed and they’re welcome when you look at the fixtures we’ve got coming up.’
