Manager Keith Hill has said he’s not expecting a busy January for Rochdale, as whilst we have a defender issue following the departure of Jack O’Connell he says he’s got a continued growing faith in our youngsters to step up and bolster the first team as and when they are needed, so he doesn’t need to bring in numbers.

Speaking to the Official Site Hill said he was happy with the balance between experience and youth now, and as the season has progressed he’s become more impressed with our youngsters and how they are stepping up to the plate when called upon.

‘I feel as though I’m in a position now where I can trust the younger players even more going into the second part of the season and I don’t think there’s a massive call for recruitment. Part of the development now is preparing the players and the squad for the second half of the season, but also next season. We’ve very mindful of the fact that while we are in the position that we’re in, we still have to get the points to secure our League One status, which is very difficult.’

Hill ends by saying that if he has to recruit then, he will do, but as things stand he’s ‘reasonably’ happy with the club, with a nod to the obviously defender situation, but he’s happy going into the next 23 matches with the players we have.

Short of a defender, any other business is likely to be a key capture that will make a huge difference to the team should they become available and he’ll continue looking, but not being desperate for numbers does put us in a stronger negotiating position anyway in terms of any permanent offerings or even when it comes to wage share for any loanees.
