The Rochdale run in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy hasn’t even started yet, as we were one of those given a bye into round two, but for some this journey ended after the first round ties on Tuesday.

A free midweek for Rochdale wouldn’t be something Keith Hill would be disappointed by at all would it!

The full first round results in the JPT were:-

Accrington 1-2 Bury
Doncaster 0-0 Burton (Doncaster won 5-3 on pens)
Hartlepool 1-1 Sheffield United (Sheff Utd won 4-3 on pens)
Morecambe 2-0 Walsall
Notts County 3-1 Mansfield
Port Vale 1-0 Carlisle
Scunthorpe 1-2 Barnsley
Shrewsbury 2-0 Oldham
AFC Wimbledon 2-3 Plymouth
Cambridge 0-2 Dagenham
Exeter 2-0 Portsmouth
Luton 2-1 Leyton Orient
Millwall 1-0 Peterborough
Newport 1-1 Swindon (Swindon won 7-6 on pens)
Northampton 3-2 Colchester
Yeovil 1-0 Barnet

You wouldn’t really say too many who would have been expected to go through didn’t, however a few make you look and think ‘hmm, interesting’ I suppose!

The stand out results, I would say, have to be Notts County’s, Dagenham’s, Luton’s and Northampton’s wins over Mansfield, Cambridge, Leyton Orient and Colchester respectively wouldn’t they?

Notts County beating Mansfield, as they did three-one at Meadow Lane, would be a result many might have expected previously but County have had a poor season so far so this could be a morale booster to turn things around?

A first win of the season for Dagenham, who were denied a first League 2 win at the weekend, could also be another morale booster likewise. A two-nil win at the Abbey Stadium against Cambridge is a good result to see them through.

Luton beating Leyton Orient isn’t a ‘shock’ or a ‘surprise’ as the Hatters would be most people’s equal, at least, of Orient you suspect? But a fine start to the season for the O’s has been in contrast to that of Luton, who secured a good two-one win.

The tie of the round, and result of the night – on paper anyway, would seem to be Northampton’s three-two win at Sixfields against Colchester? The Cobblers not only edged a five-goal thriller but this is a genuine upset for the League 2 side against a League 1 opponent!

Following the conclusion of the first round Dale know our name will now come into the competition, going into the pot for the next round, which takes place on Saturday on Soccer AM.

The second round ties are scheduled for the week commencing 5th October, who do we want?
