Wednesday Round Up

Chris Beech may have been handed a reprieve by the weather on Boxing Day. The game with Tranmere was called off due to damage caused at Prenton Park by high winds, but Dale would have had to play the game without their captain fantastic Gary Jones.

Jones phoned in sick on Boxing Day morning and, speaking to the MEN, the new manager revealed his skipper was gutted to be missing:

“Gary has a bug and rang me in the morning to say he was too ill to play, and he was gutted – he loves playing every game, but being a Birkenhead boy this was one fixture he was desperate not to miss. So he couldn`t believe it when I rang him back after lunch to say it had been called off. I think he must have sent a few of his mates round to rip a few panels off the roof at Prenton Park!”

Despite the postponement of the game, Beech is determined to take any positives he can.

“It gives us a few more days to work with the lads, familiarise them with what we`re asking them to do and perhaps look into strengthening the squad for the challenge ahead.”

A win against Walsall on New Year`s Eve could see Rochdale move out of the relegation places whilst maintaining a game in hand on their rivals. Here`s hoping that extra rest makes the difference.
